"Using Google Adsense to Earn Money from Your Website"

By now, you've probably heard that you can advertise on Google's Website(AdWords) and only pay per click. That is, you only pay each time someone clicks on your ad and thus visits your website.

However, has it occurred to you that this works in reverse and that you can advertise Google on Your Website? It's called Google AdSense.

How Does it work?

Well, let's just revise the Google PPC model a moment. Essentially, you pay Google to display your advert. Basically, the position of your advert is a function of 3 things :

1) How much you're prepared to pay in relation to you competitors.
Bidding Higher means that you'll 'brute-force' your ad to a higher ranking.

2) How popular your advert is. Good ads are 'rewarded' by being given higher rankings. This self-policing system is pretty cool in that better ads appear at the top - creating a climate of producing decent, relevant ads.

3) How relevant your website is. Google now index the web-page that you're advertising and if it ain't relevant - your ad's position will be penalized.

When you advertise on Google - you have the option to advertise just on Google, or also advertise on Google Partners(e.g. AOL) and/or advertise on affiliate websites.

The latter one is where your advert automatically appears on someone else's website.

For instance, you may have a Google Ad about fishing tackle and it appears on a website all about fishing in Devon - or an anglers' personal diary blog - or similar.
(Google have an uncanny knack of really matching the ad with the content of the site.)

You can - and should - set the price of advertising on affiliate sites to be less than that of Google Direct. I experimented and 10% worked for me - you'll need to test.

What Does this mean for me?

Well, it means that people may want to advertise - via Google - on your website.

Now here's the rub: If you have a business website, do you really want to offer ads that take people away from your website?

There are 2 schools of thought about this(yes and no obviously!)

Personally, I think that after you've got people to your website, the last thing you want to do is see them click on an advert and disappear somewhere else or even -God forbid - a competitors' site.

Unless the situation is unusual, it seems more likely that you'll have paid (either directly or indirectly) more to get that visitor to you than you'll receive by getting paid when they click away from your site.

Ironically however, you can actually use Google AdWords to get people to your website and then get paid for by advertising with AdSense. Assuming you know what you're doing, this can be profitable - it's called arbitrage. The idea being you choose and pay on cheap phrases to get people to your website for pennies then get visitors to click on ads that generate more revenue(i.e. expensive phrases) than you paid out - with the difference being your profit.

It may also make sense to monetize your traffic when you've finished with it.
This could be via websites that you're no longer running for example.
I call it 'exhaust' traffic. Another advertising possibility is when your visitors have signed up for your newsletters or bought something and then been directed to your "thank-you" page. Effectively, you're leveraging their value to you.

Some people make an absolute fortune via Google AdSense and all they do is get traffic to their websites or blogs just so that they can display Google Affiliate Ads on their website.

Typically, they spend a lot of time and effort writing articles and getting high up on the search engines - so that they can attract more 'eyeballs' visiting their site and ultimately clicking their sponsored ads.

As Google advertising is bid-based, you'll get paid different amounts(a very rough rule of thumb is that you get half of what Google gets) for different ads that appear.

Economics dictates that you'll get paid more for competitive subjects than for niche subjects - precisely because getting eyeballs from these areas are harder. So, areas like loans, cars, moorages, pensions can be extremely profitable - if you can get the traffic.

How would YOU like to get paid £5 every time someone just clicks an ad on your site?

Conclusion?

Google AdSense makes you money. Just be careful you're not compromising your sales or leads for it though.

Bear in mind that Google AdSense now delivers images and Video as well as jut text - so you can play about a bit with these and possibly add a bit more va-va-voom to your site.

Hope this has been some food for thought...
