What Worry About CAPTCHA Forms?

They're those annoying little things you see and have to enter weird codes when signing up on a website contact form.

These devices are becoming more popular as they try and control spam.

I've used them...and seen my conversion rate plummet.

They stand for Completely Automated Public Turing Test..or something like that, named after Alan Turing, a mathematician that pioneered artificial intelligence.

In short, they might be necessary if your website is being spammed with auto-generated crap. But they're a pain in the neck for the user and can be quite rude at times.

I was looking at a client's website recently and his contact form at the top ordered me to "Make Sure You Enter You Enter Your Information Properly Before Submitting" !!!

This was followed further on down the form with a CAPTCHA device that asked me to add ten and two and enter the result to 'Prove I am Human'.

It was like something designed by a NAZI.

Just for the hell of it, I entered 'Twelve' and it told me I was wrong!!

In short, it was very, very insulting and didn't compel me in the slightest to enter my details.

The Answer?
Explain WHY you require them to enter certain details, thank them in advance and be as polite as possible, just like your parents taught you to be.

Where appropriate, always reward contact forms with a free download or something, giving people a very good REASON to contact you, rather than just assuming they'll contact you because they're going to anyway.

I called it a baited mousetrap. No cheese, no mice...
