Micro Sites & Mini Sites
The purpose of a micro-site is to feature a single or very small number
of products or services within one website. Therefore, for the given
product (say) the search relevance to the site will be very high.
For example, if a particular site sells lots of electrical goods –
including toasters, the word ‘toaster’ may appear in the
site, but is ‘diluted’ by all the other products. However,
a micro(mini) site all about toasters with a suitable domain eg www.toasters-sandwich-makers.co.uk
for example will have much more relevance in the ‘eyes’
of the search engine – and therefore get better rankings.
The trick therefore, is not to have just one website that encompasses
everything, but to have a range of mini-sites, each specialising in
one particular area, that link to a central ‘hub’ –
i.e. the main website.
There are other advantages too. The more relevant inbound links that
a site has, the more ‘page-rank’ it is assigned –
another measure of search engine friendliness. This is why lots of sites
strive to get as many inbound links as possible. Whilst this is a generalisation,
having relevant mini-sites linking to your main website is a good idea.
Also, if the main site is down for any reason – you have at least
partial backup – eggs and baskets spring to mind!
The benefits of mini-micro-sites include:
• Product Specific relevancy within search engines.
Get higher rankings per product.
• Measurability. i.e. you can measure individual
mini-sites.
• Providing more chances for the main company website
to be found. Why use one fishing line when you can simultaneously
have several!
• Helping the search engine rating of the main
website because of the links going into it.
• Providing greater opportunities to test promotional
messages before introducing them on the main website.
• Increased main website page-rank due to inbound links
• Low Cost! You can set-up a mini-sites for much
less than a main website.
• Test & Measure. You can try things out
with a mini-site that you wouldn’t dare to try with your main
website. Take a risk & see what happens!!!
